The War memorial plaque, attached to the pulpit, in the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church (demolished about 2011) is now in the large room of Thornton Community Centre.

James Alder, (not Alders as on the plaque), born 1918, son of James J. R. and Mary Alder, of 78 Barnby Avenue, Lower Grange, Bradford; husband of Jessie Alder, of 40 Exeter Street, Bradford.  Private, Durham Light infantry 8th Btn, formerly of the West Yorkshire Regiment, #4539583. Died 12 June, 1944, aged 26.  Grave Reference VI. J. 2, Ryes War Cemetery, Bazenville, France(Last updated 13 September 2022)

James Towers, born 12 February 1922, son of James and Margaret Towers, of 45 Vivien Road, Fairweather Green, Bradford.  In 1939 he was employed as a Fish and Fruit Shop Assistant.  Marine, Royal Marines, no. 40 T. M. Commando, #PLY/X105669.  Died 7 March, 1944, aged 22.  Grave reference: XXII. Fred Wood, born 26 March 1917, 4th child and elder son of Harriet A. Wood, of 21 St. Andrew’s Place, Listerhills.  In 1939 he was employed as a Wool Warehouseman.  Private, Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 1st Btn, #4619289. Fred Wood was accidentally killed when a Bren gun was being cleaned in a bell tent, somewhere in Lincolnshire.  A round of ammunition had lodged in the gun chamber, unknown to those who were cleaning the gun.  During the cleaning, when it was fired it killed Private Wood instantly.  The Coronor said that there was no doubt that Private Wood was killed as a result of an accident.  Died, 17 July, 1940, aged 23.  Grave reference, Section P, Commonwealth War grave 1013,  Bradford (Bowling) Cemetery.   (Updated 14 July 2023)
