CRIME REPORTS and WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE’S NEIGHBOURHOOD ALERTS

Latest West Yorkshire Police Neighbourhood Alerts:

Note: This page will be re-written in May-June, 2024. I used to be informed of all crimes in the Thornton area, but the Police stopped doing that. However crime figures and rough locations are published monthly, and that information will be shown on a separate page from the alerts.

13 December 2023: Theft from vehicles Alert from West Yorkshire Police: “We know its a very busy time of year, but please try to remember to remove items from display within your vehicles. We are seeing an increase of theft from motor vehicles, These are generally from opportunistic thieves who have noticed something on display. Remember to check your vehicle is secure and parked somewhere well lit and if possible covered by CCTV. “

4 December 2023: Courier Fraud From West Yorkshire Police

“I want to bring to your attention a fraud that has successfully targeted two elderly ladies in the Dewsbury area costing thousands of pounds.

The scam starts with a professional sounding automated message explaining there has been activity on their bank account and for the recipient to press 1 or 2 on their phone if this was not recognised. The pressing of the button then transfers the unsuspecting victim to a human caller who in turn takes details and ‘transfers’ them onto another ‘department’.

The essence of the calls, which may vary slightly, attempts to convince the victim that their money is at risk from the local branch. Convincing the victim to withdraw money and send it off in the post or have someone collect it. You may think that you would never fall for something like this, nor did the victims family. Please speak to your nearest and dearest about this and any other scams/frauds. Lots of information available at https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/advice/fraud-and-financial-crime/fraud-and-financial-crime Banks will NEVER ask you to withdraw money so Take Five mins and ask someone.

2023, August 5: Dash cam footage of dangerous driving Operation Snap. Have you got dash cam footage of dangerous driving on the roads of West Yorkshire? You can now submit it to our portal: https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/SaferRoadsSubmissions…

2023, August 3: Theft of Car Registration plates (number plates) West Yorkshire Police are again seeing a rise in the theft of number plates from vehicles parked up within the Bradford area.  Some vehicles are sold with a sticker attachment, this obviously makes it very easy to remove the plate or leaves them open to falling off by accident or being pulled off and stolen. Please check your plates are secure and where possible used security screws.  See advice on vehicle crime at: https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/advice/vehicle-crime/vehicle-crime

2023, July 31: Modern slavery in some Car Washes West Yorkshire Police has launched a new campaign to highlight the issue of modern slavery taking place in some car washes across the county.

Does your local car wash seem unusually cheap? Do they only take cash payments and open at strange hours?  Do the people working there seem afraid or like they’re being controlled?  Do they look malnourished or neglected?

If any of this is sounding familiar, then the person cleaning your car could be a victim of modern slavery.  They could be being forced to work unreasonable hours, for little or no pay and they could be being forced into criminal behaviour or sexual activity.

Some other signs to look out for include:

  • Children working
  • No sign of health and safety equipment
  • Signs of people staying overnight or sleeping

If you have concerns that a car wash near you is exploiting its workers, you should report it.

There are a number of different ways you can do this:

  • Contact West Yorkshire Police by calling 101 or using online Live Chat.  If a crime is in progress or there is an immediate danger to life, call 999.
  • Contact the GLAA’s Intelligence Team on 0800 4320804 or email intelligence@gla.gov.uk  GLAA is the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority.
  • Download the Clewer Initiative’s Safe Car Wash app,
  • Call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700
  • Contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111

Reported Crimes

Compared with other areas in the Bradford West Policing Division there are fewer reported crimes in Thornton, but more than in the rural villages of Denholme and Cullingworth, which are both in the Shipley Division.

The Home Office produces maps each month, showing the broad location and type of individual crimes, for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The quickest way to reach the crime maps is to go via Bradford West Division Neighbourhood Policing website, clicking on “Online mapping” on the right hand side, rather than going via the Police.uk website, which often throws up error pages.

Example pages are shown below. The first shows the total number of reported crimes in a specific month, by area. Next by clicking on the total for Thornton seeing details of which areas had crimes, and the third, crimes of a specific type. If you click on a number it will show the type of crimes in that location. There are also definitions of different crime types.

Details of a specific type of crime. The figure of 51 is for the whole of the Bradford West Division
