Staffing
The Library is staffed by volunteers from the local area. The books and other facilities are provided by Bradford Council Library Service.
Opening hours
Tuesdays from 10am to 12noon.
Wednesdays 10am to 1pm, and 5pm to 7pm.
Fridays 2pm to 4pm.
Saturdays 10am-1.00pm.
Events include:
Rhymetime for pre-school children, for pre-school children, on Wednesdays from 11am to 12noon. Free
Second Thursday of the month: Book group, 1pm to 2 pm
Facilities include:
2 PCs for Public use during opening hours, except for the last 15 minutes. These PCs have free access to the Internet, free access to Ancestry dot com, free access to Find My Past, and several other databases, as well as wordprocessing and email.
A printer. There is a charge of 10p per sheet (or page). Black printing only.
Books for loan including: Board books for children, picture books, story books. The story books are arranged by authors’ surnames, and forenames, books for Young Adults, non-fiction books arranged by the Dewey Decimal System (see below). Fiction books for adults, arranged by type, which are Adventure Fiction, Crime Fiction, General Fiction, Family stories, Historical Fiction and Science Fiction, plus Large Print books and Audio books. Adult non-fiction books are arranged by the Dewy Decimal System (see below), which is used in libraries throughout the world. At the end of the main sequence are Local History books about Thornton and adjoining areas.
The Dewey Decimal system, for arranging non-fiction books, splits all knowledge into 10 broad groups:
- 000—Computer Science, Information, & General Works
- 100—Philosophy & Psychology
- 200—Religion
- 300—Social Sciences
- 400—Language
- 500—Science
- 600—Technology
- 700—Arts & Recreation
- 800—Literature
- 900—History & Geography
Within each, subjects are broken down further, for example:

- 610 Medical Science
- 620 Engineering
- 630 Agriculture
- 640 Domestic sciences
- 650 Business management
- 660 Chemical engineering
- 670 Manufacturing
- 680 Manufacture of products for specific uses
